Hiking in Shing Mun Country Park

This past weekend I joined a group for a hike in the Shing Mun Country Park. The others were from HK Baptist university--another Fulbrighter, two art professors from Taiwan, and a visiting scholar from Arkansas. We left from their apartment complex in Sha Tin and walked about 10 miles through the park. The first part involved going UP on steps and everything is paved so it is hard on your feet. We ended by going along the Shing Mun reservoir. You could almost smell vegetation on the walk :) At the end of the reservoir there were places for picnics and a few people were around, but not that many. The monkey would steal food from people so you had to be careful. Though it was a beautiful day--sunny and warm--the haze was there. This is because in the winter the winds blow from the north and bring pollution from mainland China. Along the lake we also found a grave.

From the dam we walked down a road and got a bus into a city close by and ate supper. I would have never known which bus went where without our Chinese guides. It was a very short taxi cab ride home.
